Postdoctoral position in assessing Red Sea phytoplankton temporal variability through high-performance in situ flow cytometry

The Biological Oceanography Laboratory lead by Prof. S. Agusti at KAUST is seeking a highly qualified candidate for a postdoctoral position in Red Sea phytoplankton research. The research project is based on automatically-acquired data by a submersed flow cytometer (Cytobuoy) and associated instruments moored in the coastal Red Sea, providing a high-frequency time series of environmental variables, particles and plankton. The postdoctoral researcher will study the time scales of variability of the phytoplankton communities and its relationship with environmental changes in one of the warmest and most oligotrophic seas.

The candidate must hold a PhD degree in a related field and possess a strong background in ecology of marine phytoplankton, and a documented record of previous research accomplishments.  The candidate will demonstrate experience in the use of flow cytometry and expertise in phytoplankton studies, including identification of communities and/or size classes.   Applicants should submit a detailed CV, a cover letter describing their experience and interest in the project, and contact information from three academic references.

The contract (two years), salary and general working conditions are internationally highly competitive,  and will cover flight, health insurance and accommodation on campus. KAUST is world class campus with state-of-the-art research facilities.  It also offer vibrant, multi-cultural, open living environment and ample recreational facilities.

Please send your full application package to  susana.agusti@kaust.edu.sa. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis though priority is assigned to those received before 31st July 2021.  KAUST offers highly competitive postdoc salaries, taking into account prior academic experience.

Laboratory and field technician position

The candidate must hold a Bsc. or Ms. degree in a related field, will demonstrate experience in marine studies.  Applicants should submit a detailed CV, a cover letter describing their experience and interest, and contact information from two academic references.

The contract is initially for two years, with a renewal option, and will be starting in Sept 2021.  Salary and general working conditions are internationally highly competitive and will cover flight, health insurance and accommodation on campus.
